A New Beginning
Oh my goodness, my people! In the spirit of renewed hope and excitement, I’ve decided to crawl out of my shell and revive The Lawyer’s Daughter podcast. But this time, it’s for political purposes. I know that might make some of you hesitate, but before you decide not to listen, let me explain why this matters and why I hope you’ll stick around.
Why Politics Now?
If you’ve been listening to my podcast, you know there are a few things I really care about human rights, civil rights, and justice. These issues attract many of us to true crime and are the foundation of my decision to step back into the political arena. Today, I’m excited because it feels like the heavy weight of doom and gloom has been lifted for the first time in a while. There’s hope again, and honestly, that’s quintessentially American. I grew up in the Kennedy years—hope was everything. The motivation drove us through the ’60s, even through tough times like the Vietnam War. Hope is what makes America brave enough to face challenges head-on.
Connecting True Crime and Politics
Kamala Harris loves Venn diagrams, and so do I. There’s a huge overlap between what her campaign stands for, what the Democrats stand for, and what we true crime enthusiasts stand for. We stand for justice, law and order, and truth. We don’t want to see people wrongly convicted, and we believe in prison reform because we know the system can be cruel. We want our laws to reflect our humanity. We want accountability, and with a prosecutor like Kamala in the chair, we have a real chance to right some of the wrongs in our society.
The Plan: 100 Days of Action
As we head into this campaign, there’s a lot we true crime people can do. I plan to spend the next 100 days highlighting issues that affect both the true crime community and the broader law and order community. We’ll talk about victims’ rights, protecting women, and ensuring that the powerful don’t continue to exploit the less powerful. This podcast will still have The Lawyer’s Daughter flavor because, at my core, I love the law. I’m not a lawyer, but as a layperson, I’m passionate about using the law to fight injustice and move us forward as a country.
We have 100 days, starting today, and I’m committed to doing a short podcast every day. It’ll be audio-only, just me talking to you, sharing thoughts, updates, and ways we can all get involved. I’ll be on Twitter (yes, despite its current issues) to continue the conversation, and I encourage you to join me there.
Get Involved
Tonight, the Democratic National Committee will hold an important phone call at 7:30 PM Eastern Time. Join the call early on to listen, learn, and understand the issues. No commitment is required—just tune in and get informed. I’ll post the details on my Twitter and encourage you to participate.
Involving your children in these activities is also a fantastic way to teach them about civic engagement. When Obama won, I sat on the couch sobbing, explaining to my daughter how history changes and how we witnessed one of those moments. Taking your kids to the polls, discussing these topics, and engaging them in these conversations can instill a sense of civic duty and hope in them.
Legal Battles and Civic Responsibility
Throughout this election process, I’ll cover important legal issues as they arise. For instance, Mark Elias is fighting unjust voting laws, and I’ll keep you updated on those efforts. This podcast is about more than just politics—it’s about understanding our rights and responsibilities and how we can all contribute to improving our country.
Personal Update
On a personal note, I want to share what’s been happening in my life. My mom recently passed away from two aortic aneurysms, and it’s been incredibly tough. Watching someone die is not something we’re made for, and it’s been the hardest thing I’ve ever faced. My daughter moving back to Santa Cruz and handling my mom’s affairs have added to the chaos, but despite it all, I’m here. I want to use this time to boost America, reinstall our institutions, and unite. I’ve missed talking to you, my favorite people on the planet, and I’m excited to reconnect.
