Today is Day 91 of our journey together, and I’m thrilled to have you with me. This episode is a bit of a hodgepodge, but we’re diving into some critical topics that every engaged citizen should be aware of. So let’s get started!
Start by Understanding the Issues
One of our most powerful tools as voters is understanding the issues that affect our lives. I highly recommend checking out iSideWith.com. This site offers quizzes, polls, and discussions that help you see where you stand on various issues. From social issues to economic policy, immigration, health care, and more—this resource is invaluable for getting a clear picture of where you align politically.
Take the time to identify the three to five issues that matter most to you. Knowing where you stand will help you make informed decisions at the ballot box and understand with whom you stand.
The Power of Voting and Supporting Others
Voting is one of the coolest things in the world—it’s your chance to choose leaders who align with your values and vision for the country. But voting isn’t just about you; it’s also about supporting others, especially those who might face barriers to casting their ballot.
For instance, women who are survivors of domestic violence often face challenges when it comes to voting freely and safely. Advocates like Olivia, co-founder of Fresh Starts Registry, are working to empower these women by ensuring their voices are heard. Voting is about reclaiming your power, especially if trauma has tried to take it from you. If you have a neighbor or friend who needs help getting to the polls, be that support system for them.
The Importance of Privacy in Voting
A question that often arises, especially among women in difficult situations, is whether their partner can determine who they voted for. The answer is no—your vote is private. Even if you’re a registered Republican, you can vote for a Democrat in a general election and vice versa. Your voter registration is public, but your vote is not. This is your right, and it’s protected.
Watch Out for Election Subversion
We can’t ignore what’s happening in places like Georgia, where there is an alarming trend of subverting elections. Election board officials, who are supposed to certify results, are overstepping their roles and trying to influence the outcome. This is not what democracy is about. We must stay vigilant and ensure that every vote is counted and respected.
Joy in Civic Engagement
Participating in our democracy should bring us joy. It’s about being part of something bigger than ourselves, engaging with our community, and making a difference. Whether through voting, helping others get to the polls, or staying informed, there’s joy to be found in every step.
